CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

I managed to sleep through the next night . . . sort of. I went to bed knowing that Sol Weaver had likely been arrested for Wade Farmer’s murder. I had wanted to tell Charlotte what was happening, but she wasn’t at Swissmen Sweets after the Blueberry Bash. Maami said she had gone with Deputy Little to pick up his parents at the airport.

Poor Charlotte, she was getting married soon, meeting her in-laws for the first time, and dealing with the murder. Deputy Little was second-in-command at the sheriff’s department. He had to know if Sol Weaver had already been taken into custody. I couldn’t imagine he would keep this a secret from his bride. Even so, I wished I’d gotten the chance to see Charlotte before she left, so I could tell her what was going on, and also tell her we would fight it. I would do whatever I had to in order to prove her father’s innocence or possible guilt.

I just wanted to get to the truth . . . whatever the truth might be.

I didn’t see Aiden that night; he texted to say he was working late going over the financial accounts of the Linzer Petting Zoo. It was just as well because I was so tired from lack of sleep the night before. He also told me that he had a contractor friend name Jonah Beachy, who was interested in talking to me about the candy factory job, and he could meet me at the factory at four in the afternoon on Sunday. I readily told Aiden to confirm the appointment.

I was up at four the next morning and out the door at four thirty. My idea was to arrive early and finish my paperwork at the candy shop, and then sleuth in the afternoon before my meeting with the new contractor. As it was Sunday, the shop was closed; so typically, I paid bills and placed orders on Sundays.

I chuckled at the very thought of sleuthing. If my mother could see me now, she would grab me by the ear and try to drag me back to Connecticut. Not that I would allow her to.

When I stepped into the candy shop just shy of five in the morning, I found Charlotte sitting on a wooden stool in front of the stainless-steel island, crying into a pot of fresh blueberry jam that she was stirring.

“Charlotte?” I asked.

She dropped the spoon into the pot.

“Bailey!” She jumped out of her seat and rushed toward me, enveloping me in a hug. She smelled of blueberry and the lemon dish soap we used. “Bailey.” Her voice was muffled as she cried into my shoulder. “The sheriff arrested my father for Wade Farmer’s murder, and it’s all my fault.”

I stepped back from her embrace and held onto her shoulders. “How can it be your fault?”

“If I’d never left home, Jericho never would have started working for that awful man, and my father would have had nothing to do with Wade Farmer.
